This course aims to help students understand 20th-century literary theory concerning some of the key issues explored and debated in the West. We will focus on such theories as psychoanalysis, Marxism, feminism, deconstruction, new historicism, queer theory, post-colonialism, postmodern space, trauma, and age as performance. Related issues include self and other, man and woman, history and ideology, knowledge and power, speech and writing, nature and culture, experience and identity, postmodern space, age and aging, etc.

Textbook

 Tyson, Lois. Critical Theory Today: A User-friendly Guide. 2nd ed. New York: Routledge, 2006.

Requirements and Grades

1.       Fifteen-minute group presentation on a point in the theory of the week, to lead class discussions (pair work, presentation based on texts from reputable academic sources of your own choice; wherever applicable, elaborate on and/or critique a point discussed in Tyson; an e-version of the written report sent to the class email address), 15%.

2.       Active class participation, 15%.

3.       Final exam (on theory and literary criticism), 70%.
