Dr. Qiu Feng, Freshman class, School of English and International Studies, BFSU, June 2012.

Help the student writer for a “show more than tell” exercise to think of the most specific detail for each underlined word in the following passage.

Telling: You could spend a lifetime chasing this girl only to get a “no” for an answer.

Showing: You happen to see her buying a fashion magazine at the bookstore one day, so you collect as much information as you can about a supermodel including her fashion style and fancy hairdo, in order to find a chance to talk about these things to show the two of you have so much in common. Then you ask her out to see her favorite romantic movie, with two other friends, of course (so that she won’t be suspicious of your motive). When she takes part in a 100-meter event, you wait at the finish line, trying to give her an icy-cold soft drink taken out right from your cooler. If she is a big fan of a famous author, you pretend you run into her in the library only by coincidence, with one of his works in your hand, and then you chat with her about the writer. But when you think you are close enough to her and finally pluck up the courage to say those breathtaking three words, tenderness is drained from her eyes, and rejection is written all over her face.
