Man on a Ledge* (摘自《英语写作教程:从创新思维到批判思维;1. 创新思维与写前技巧》张在新编著)

       A man is balancing on the edge of a ledge running along the side of a building. What is he doing up there? List at least ten of your best guesses, preferably twenty.

(1)      A burglar trying to break into a house.

(2)      A debtor hiding from a creditor.

(3)      A firefighter at work.

(4)      A policeman running after a suspect.

(5)      A prisoner escaping from prison.

(6)      A stuntman in a movie.

(7)      He is about to dive into the swimming pool next to the building.

(8)      An acrobat keeping balance/giving a performance.

(9)      Someone doing martial arts.

(10)  Checking electrical wires.

(11)  Cleaning the windows.

(12)  Decorating the outside of the building.

(13)  Enjoying sights of the city.

(14)  Escaping from an assassin.[1]

(15)  Fixing a crack in the wall (repairing the building).

(16)  Fixing the antenna.[2]

(17)  Getting a better signal for his cell phone.

(18)  Hanging up a banner.

(19)  Putting up a billboard or ad.

(20)  Hiding something in the wall.

(21)  Having locked himself out and trying to get into the building through a window.

(22)  Lover’s husband has come back unexpectedly.

(23)  Measuring the circumference[3] of the building.

(24)  He is mentally disturbed.

(25)  Parachuted from a plane to the ledge, unable to get down.

(41)  Trying to reach the helicopter coming to his rescue.

       *Adapted from de Bone (1970), this exercise was originally an example for altered pictures: “Half of a picture is obscured. What is revealed is a man balancing on the edge of a ledge running along the side of some building.”


[1] assassin: a person who kills someone (such as a famous or important person) usually for political reasons or for money

[2] antenna: a device (such as a wire or a metal rod) for sending or receiving radio or television signals

[3] circumference: the length of a line that goes around something or that makes a circle or other round shape

[4] gymnastics: physical exercises for developing strength and balance

[5] acrophobia: abnormal dread of being at a great height
