创新思维和批判思维训练在写前构思阶段和写作、修改阶段的各自定位,不仅有认知和写作过程的理论依据,从对学生的问卷调查中也能看出他们需要在写作过程中分别加强创新思维/写前构思和批判思维的训练,并且有必要适当减少他们对文章结构和语言准确性的过度关注,以免对题材的挖掘和内容的扩充产生不良影响。
2010年9月新学期开学第一周,在英语学院一年级写作组的其他教师的协助下,笔者在全年级的新生写作班做了一次问卷调查,问卷调查主要目的是了解学生的英语写作习惯和在写作中存在的困难。通过对返回的134份答卷的简单数据统计,我们可以对问卷调查所反映出的有关写前构思和修改策略方面的数据进行以下分析。

(1)-a. 在拿到作文题后,各有52.2%和13.4%的学生有时或经常不知如何下笔(占总数的65.6%,近三分之二)。通过写前构思的训练,下笔难的问题会有所改善。
(1)-b. 53.7%的学生几乎不受找主题的困扰。可能有两个原因:(1)如果是命题作文,找主题的空间不大(一次与写作班学生代表交谈写作困难时,他们提出请老师每次规定好作文题,而不要有自己选题的自由——他们习惯于前者,后者对他们来说难度更大)。(2)学生没有养成写前构思、挖掘题材的习惯,作文的主题不是在自我发现的过程中形成的,而是当时想到的,因此找主题不成为问题。
而对其余的46.3%的学生来说,他们有时或经常受到找主题的困扰,原因可能很多(如受语言水平的限制无法随意写自己感兴趣的主题,对写作本身产生“恐惧感”,缺乏挖掘题材的训练等等),[1] 而写前构思技巧能有效克服或缓解这些困难。这主要从以下两方面考虑:(1)阮周林(Ruan, 2010)认为中国学生对英语写作的焦虑是构成学生写作元认知知识(metacognitive knowledge)中的一个方面。写作焦虑的产生源于学生内在因素和外部影响,内在因素如学生在写作过程中用中文思考的观点无法用英文恰当地表达;外部影响如由于教师过多强调语言的准确性和语言质量,从而束缚了思维的自由发挥。在上述两种情形下,学生作文用中式英语甚至用中文单词与英语混合表达是不允许的。他还认为通过写前构思技巧的训练能帮助学生提高对写作的自信心,从而能减轻这一焦虑。(2)类似的焦虑在吴丹(Wu, 2010)对美国大学生开设的汉语写作课中却较少遇到。她提到了“双语转换”(interlingual transfer)的概念,原因是在她的汉语写作课中设计了写前构思练习的环节,即自由写作练习(free writing)。在这一过程中外国学生从中英文搀杂的写作逐步过渡到完全使用中文写作。准确性及语言教师比较注重的其他方面在free writing的练习中都不作要求,其优点是对学生隐藏的两次编码及解码的写作过程给予认可并提供练习机会。而在通常的外语写作教学过程中却一直比较偏向于强迫学生将其中的翻译(第二次编码/解码过程)隐藏起来,[2] 因此从母语直译到外语的写作被压抑下去(从而作文时表现出英语跟不上中文思考的步伐)。她指出这种做法不符合外语写作的过程,从而容易导致学生的焦虑。虽然阮周林和吴丹对焦虑形成的原因的看法不尽相同,但他们对写前构思的认同几乎是一致的。由于允许学生自由发挥,其中包括中式英语(翻译或第二次编码解码过程)和汉语单词的并用,写前构思阶段的写作能帮助学生减轻对写作产生的焦虑并尽快完成“双语转换”的过渡。
(1)-c. (1)-d. 有54.5%的学生能较容易地想出主要观点来扩充文章的主题,而在运用细节来支撑观点方面,只有26.4%的学生几乎没有困难,其余73.6%的学生或多或少都认为有困难。我们不难发现相对于54.5%的人数当中只有略半数的学生(26.4%)既能用主要观点来深化主题,又能找到细节来完成段落扩充。有超过总数四分之一(28.1%)的学生是先想好主题和主要观点(即构思文章的大致框架结构)再用细节去充实文章内容,而不是先挖掘内容细节再从中提取、升华想要表达的主要观点,进而说明主题。前者是以文章结构优先的写作,而后者是以内容优先的写作。由此可见,重视写作结构的教学对这部分学生的影响超出对内容挖掘所激励的程度。[3]
(1)-e. (1)-f. 各有41.2%和67.4%的学生分别认为几乎没有困难写篇题句和段落主题句,显然他们认为写篇题句比写段落主题句更困难。这可能跟学生们的归纳能力有关(想出的多个主题句不容易用一句话归纳),也可能跟挖掘主题内容的广度不够有关(如果挖掘了更多的主题思想,学生们更容易从中选择内容相关的主题句,从而更容易归纳成篇题句)。前者需要更多的批判思维(逻辑)方面的训练,而后者更需要创新思维/写前构思方面的训练,挖掘题材内容的效果好坏可直接影响到文章的布局某篇。
(1)-g. 只有15.9%的学生在写作用词表达方面几乎没有困难,大多数学生(84.1%)或多或少都感到写作时有英语跟不上中文思维的困难。如果与(1)-d的结果对比(73.6%的学生或多或少都认为运用细节有困难),像许多写作教师认为的那样,写作的困难也许不在于结构或细节内容而主要是词汇问题。学生们的语言表达跟不上自己的思想,这肯定是外语写作学习的主要困难之一,这又折射了对(1)-b的结果所做的分析(46.3%的学生或多或少受到找主题的困扰),我们需要给学生在写前构思阶段更大的自由空间,便于他们尽快完成“双语转换”的过渡,而不应断定这仅仅是个纯粹的语言问题。
(2)-a. (2)-b. 在87.5%的有修改作文习惯的学生当中有64%只是修改语法而已,对内容的重新考虑没有得到足够重视,他们的写作习惯主要还是以“成品”为中心。应该鼓励学生尽量多地完成从初稿修改到终稿的写作过程。
(2)-c—(2)-f. 绝大多数学生(93.3%)有很好的改错习惯,即在写完作文之后的修改阶段改错,这样分写作和修改两阶段来完成作文有利于他们在写作时不会过多地受到语言准确性的干扰。但(其中)也有超过三分之二(72.1%和69.9%)的学生或多或少有边写作边改错或边写边回头读自己的作文这样的习惯,这说明这部分学生在写作时可能较多地在考虑语言的准确性,因此他们写作的思路较容易被其所干扰而影响到写作内容的挖掘和扩展。[4] 问题在于他们对准确性的关注较容易出现“盲区”,即错误的识别率比较低——超过三分之二的学生(70.5%)或多或少有困难从自己的作文里找出错来。

表2显示挖掘题材(363 points)、细节(288 points)和主题句段落(261 points)等与内容相关的写作技巧高居课堂时间投入的前三位,但表3反映的运用写前构思技巧的频率并不高,使用技巧的类别也缺乏多样性:不使用写前构思技巧的有18人次,采用列单的有36人次、提纲33人次、笔记19人次、初稿2人次。学生写作的另一弱点也许是缺乏读者意识(分值最低的75分),因此他们的写作交际目的可能不够明确。
总体而言,从调查数据分析的结果来看,多数学生属于“古典型”或“成品型”作者,在题材内容的挖掘方面的训练显得不够。他们需要更系统地学习创新思维/写前构思技巧,向“浪漫型”作者转变,以便更有效地开阔思路、充实写作内容。同时,如果过多或不顾及写作过程中各阶段的特点而强调文章结构形式和语言的准确性,这不仅可能效率不高,而且会因此对写作内容的挖掘和拓展产生较大的负面影响。我们需要在作文的修改阶段安排同伴互评(peer evaluation/editing)的环节,[5] 这不仅因为来自同伴读者的心理压力可以强化作者在写作修改阶段自己改错的理念,还可以相互提高改错的效率。
