Why Freudian psychoanalysis?

penis envy: phallus (Lacan) – womb envy (Spivak)

        Oedipus complex – symbolic (Lacan)

female masculinity (oral, anal, phallic phases) – Irigaray’s bisexuality

latent content – manifest content through displacement and condensation (primary revision of dream contents from the unconscious) – unconscious structured like language – signified / signifier (Lacan) – deferral (Derrida)

Freud (Sigmund Freud on Sexuality)

pleasure principle – self-preservation instincts – sexual instincts: oral, anal, phallic/genital – penis envy – Oedipus complex

        reality principle – castration complex

        unconscious – id, superego, ego

evidence for the unconscious: post-hypnotic suggestion (umbrella) – Emma, fear of shops (2 scenes in childhood: 12 years old and 8 years old)

His dissolution of the Oedipus Complex

manipulating his genitals frequently - threat of castration from mother

threatened with castration for long-continued bed-wetting.

at the sight of the female genitals

child’s ego turns away from the Oedipus complex.

Her detachment from mother

clitoris – little penis – a ground for inferiority.

        already castrated

jealousy of another child on the ground that her mother is fonder of it than of her – giving up her attachment to her mother.

a prohibition of masturbation of the clitoris – detachment from mother

“A defiant persistence in masturbation appears to open the way to masculinity.”

Her Oedipus complex (Electra Complex)

The wish for a penis and the wish for a baby would be fundamentally identical.

a desire to receive a baby from her father as a gift - to bear him a child.

women’s dreams that had occurred after their first experience of intercourse – to keep for herself the penis which she had felt.

Her dissolution of the Oedipus complex

wish is never fulfilled (already “castrated,” no fear of that)

Lacan

(Grosz, Elizabeth. Jaques Lacan: A Feminist Introduction)

– contributions: language, gender role in relation to phallus (symbolic, social, not anatomical)

1. Androgyny

2. Real (0-6 months)

body as fragmented, fusion with mother’s body

Eagleton – the Real and the Imaginary combined

fullness, complete with mother’s body (breast)

no sense of absence or lack – sucking breast even with the absence of milk (pleasure, no sense of absence)

3. Imaginary (imaginary identifications) (6-18 months)

mirror stage: rouge experiment – before and after

before: smiling father – shocked by his voice

can’t distinguish between specular image and physical presence of father

image of father and real person

image of self in the mirror, no real person to compare with

        imaginary

sense of self for the first time

pleasing (seeing self in its completeness) and frustrating (fragmented body of experience vs. totality of body as seen in the mirror)

sense of absence (absence of mother)

two person relation: blurring self vs. (m)other

4. Symbolic

fort / da game – language

        father – symbolic father – name-of-the-father – law – symbolic order

survival of the infant, two-person relationship through L, broader world of signification (the symbolic, name of the father)

boy – identifies with father / phallus / speaking position in L – phallic L (woman’s I reflects the masculine subject)

girl – “castrated” mother – relation to father – phallus on loan from father (punishing boy for wrong doing)

penis – signifier for phallus (signified), signifier for power

        phallus as a signifier

phallic mother in the Real (no lack)

in the imaginary (blurring self and other), the penis (imaginary object) is detachable – the penis mother once had is the detachable penis – has the function of the phallus – an object of signification (for    fullness, no lack) – not a biological organ

phallus – symbolic as in fetishism – fetish, fetishist

phallus – “a signifier within a signifying system, and cannot thus be possessed or owned by anyone.”

having a penis is no guarantee of avoiding lack without the mediation of the other (mother, father, etc.) and the Other (name of father, law) – no one has access to the phallus.

domain of the Other – socio-symbolic network regulated according to language-like rules (law of the father)

male as the desire of the other – having phallus

women desire the penis (because castrated) – men can offer them the penis as an object of desire – men’s secondary access to phallic status – penis as an imaginary object (phallus) is already a signifier – signifies the presence and absence of access to power and self-definition

phallus signifies and produces the exclusion of women – a signifier – a symbolic object dividing the two sexes in giving power to those who have it (presence of the penis giving access to the signifier).
