 Selected Short Stories and Western Culture                            

 Spring 2011                                                   

Course Objectives

This course aims to help students to better understand Western culture through short stories and movies. We are going to discuss issues like desire, man and woman, marriage and family, capital and commodity, society and tradition, racial conflict, reality and representation, man versus nature, etc.

Homework includes the following:

(1)   Reading assignments on literary theory: psychoanalysis, feminism, commodity, ideology, colonialism and postcolonialism, power and truth, etc.

(2)   Nineteen classic short stories: Frank O’Connor’s “My Oedipus Complex,” Bernard Malamud’s “The Model,” John Updike’s “Unstuck,” Max Shulman’s “Love is a Fallacy,” Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery,” Somerset Maugham’s “Mr. Know-All,” Julio Cortazar’s “Continuity of Parks,” etc.

(3)   Thirteen movies (on DVD) centering on the above themes (for presentations): Tadpole, Notes on a Scandal, Elegy, Down with Love, Indecent Proposal, The Pursuit of Happyness, Man to Man, Changeling, Simone, etc.

Requirements

Do the homework, discuss the stories and movies, and have fun.

Grades

  (1) Fifteen-minute presentation on an assigned movie (pair work), 15%;

  (2) Active participation in discussion, 15%;

  (3) Ten-page, double-spaced term paper (with literature review, theoretical framework, MLA documentation), 70%.
